Torch is from my ongoing series based on Jazz album covers. Dakota Staton is a black singer and this piece represents her as silver — blown out from the bright lights — a reference to end of the novel, The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. Overall, the series is about the history and packaging of music — the whitening of black music and vice-versa, crossover music and the packaging of artists and image for sale across color lines.
